Buffa's Bar & Restaurant 945 9397; 1001 Esplanade Ave; kitchen open 11am-8pm daily) is a bar with an inexpensive menu that has been a neighborhood favorite since 1939. The kitchen churns out greasy burgers and darn reasonable daily specials (usually meat and potatoes and a salad for about $6). It's worth knowing about if you're interested in seeing the neighborhood's down-to-earth side.
La Peniche 943 1460; 1940 Dauphine St; open 24 hrs Thursday to Tuesday) appears at first glance to be an unassuming, little corner restaurant, a few blocks from the Frenchmen St scene. It's open 24 hours, but it tends to get interesting late at night.
Old Dog New Trick Cafe 943 6368; 517 Frenchmen St; open 11am-10pm daily) is an entirely vegetarian restaurant that serves mercifully good food. The Ben burger is a hearty blend of rice, millet, lentils and sunflower seeds, molded into a patty and served in pita bread. Buckwheat soba noodles and udon noodles with tempeh are equally satisfying.
Siam Cafe 949 1750; 435 Esplanade Ave; open 5pm-2am daily) is a dim, narrow den where you can order all the Thai standards, including pad Thai, spicy curries, and many vegetarian dishes. It rises to greater heights with specialties such as the royal hunter's grill. The Siam also offers a nice variety of beers to wash down the spices.
Adolfo's 948 3800; 611 Frenchmen St; open 6pm-11pm Monday to Saturday) might be just what you came looking for in New Orleans, a romantic little Creole-Italian restaurant hidden away upstairs from the bar.
Belle Forche 940 0722; 1407 Decatur St; open 5.30pm-10.30pm Tuesday, Wednesday & Sunday, 5.30pm-2.30am Thursday to Saturday) has the most stylish dining room in the neighborhood,
Cafe Negril 944 4744; 606 Frenchmen St; open 11am-3pm Tuesday to Friday, 6pm-midnight Tuesday to Saturday) is a large, colorful space featuring the Caribbean creations of Chef Cecil
Palmer
Praline Connection 943 3934; 542 Frenchmen St; open 11am-10.30pm Sunday to Thursday, 11am-midnight Friday & Saturday) serves up righteous but slightly pricey soul food: fried chicken, Creole gumbo, beans and greens.
Santa Fe ( 944 6854; 801 Frenchmen St; is a popular southwestern restaurant that fuels its patrons with potent margaritas to get the scene revved up before chile rellenos (grilled peppers filled with melted cheese), steak tacos and roast duck hit the tables.
