I have experienced my own Cinderella story through the magic of Mardi Gras.  As I went from handy mam in faded jeans to  pretty harlequin clown in white satin, faux diamonds and pearls.

Last Mardi Gras I donned a satin harlequin clown outfit and set out on a Mardi Gras morning to take some pictures of neighborhood walking clubs. My friend Holly commented "You look perfect for The Society Of Saint Ann".

To my delight  Holly invited me to their breakfast party, where  I photographed the most clever costumes  up close, Josephine Baker with banana skirt, A branch manager complete with branches a yen and yang, A beautiful Spanish dancer,  a swamp creature, all shared grits and grillades.

I marched with them through the neighborhood. Following the large hoops on poles satin ribbons streaming. I always have believed costuming causes an altered state of consciousness. Was this a dream I wondered?  I was floating down Royal among the most beautiful people in costumes. Ending up on a Royal St balcony .throwing beads to Mardi  Gras  revelers with the most exclusive and private  club in New Orleans. Was it real I wonder as I search for the pretty satin harlequin clown in my reflection in the glass of Frady's store window.

Bits of glitter beads and feathers are always present  hidden in the cracked sidewalks of Bywater Marigny sidewalks courtyards and corners. As I walk to the tracks on press street. to watch the trains and eat my PO Boy.  A purple  feather breaks free and promenades down the middle of the narrow street oblivious to the danger of cars, one passes depositing the feather at my feet. I retrieve it and tuck it safely in my pocket Just what I need for a headdress, Mardi Gras never really ends in the  Bywater. It hides in the cracks and crevices of our sidewalks courtyards and stoops glittering and winking thru the year to emerge anew .Pretty for just a short time like Bywater's Handy Mam/Satin Clown.
