How to Ride the Streetcar
The one-way fare for
the Riverfront line is $1.25 (a quarter more than the $1.00 fare on other
RTA lines). Transfers are an additional ten cents. Fares must be paid and
transfers obtained when boarding. You can also use your VisiTour one-day
or three-day pass to ride the Riverfront Line. Board the Perley Thomas
cars and pay your fare in the front; exit in the rear. Pull the bell cord
running the length of the car before your stop to signal the driver you
want to get off.
Plans to extend streetcar travel
into the Maragny/Bywater area.
The streetcar that
now runs from canal to the end of the french market may some day again
run well into the Bywater area. I hope this happens. I believe in restoration
and people friendly zoning, in fact many businesses were located in the
Bywater/Maragny. Observe every corner structure; most all were businesses.
Some people confuse conservation with
restoration. I would like more of the
kind of people that the streetcar line would introduce to shop, play, live,
and invest in the Bywater area.
The New Orleans railway
and light company ran the line until 1948 when it was replaced by today's
Desire bus. The bus may
not be as colorful, but the people of
toadies Bywater/Maragny are just as worthy of the pen as the ones Tennessee

and a lively streetcar driver who makes the ride intrusting with a humerous
history of the area. All
conductors point out points of interest.
Ride the streetcar to the very end and
have coffee at La Medallions or have a grilled cheese at the Camellia Grill.
The St. Charles Route Stop #1 for the St. Charles Streetcar is at
the corner of Canal and Carondelet Streets. The streetcar turns onto Canal
Street, then back around again on St.
Charles for the trip uptown. The car travels the length of St. Charles
Avenue, turning
onto Carillon Avenue at the Riverbed.
The line continues up Carillon to Claiborne Ave., where the line terminates.
The return trip is the opposite of the
outbound trip up to St. Charles Ave. and Lee Circle. St. Charles Ave. becomes
one-way
outbound at Lee Circle, so the final leg
of the inbound trip takes Carondelet St. to get back to Canal St.
